Russian Railways (RZD) rollout its new sleeping train
Update: 16:06, Wednesday, Sep 26,2012 (GMT+7)
The rollout of the first of 200 sleeping cars for Russian Railways (RZD) was celebrated in Vienna at the end of April 2012.

RZD had placed an order for these sleeping cars with Siemens and the local coach builder Tverskoy Vagonostroitelny Zavod AG (TVZ) in 2009. Due to the special technical equipment, RZD can operate the cars in cross-border traffic and throughout Central and Western Europe.

Each sleeping car has 8 sleeping compartment with 4 sleeper beds each, a service compartment, a rest compartment for the train attendant, a standard toilet and a toilet with integrated shower. The 4 sleeper beds can be converted during the day into 4 fully functional seats with headrests.

Direct Russian sleeping-cars like this one link Moscow with Amsterdam, Cologne, Basel, Prague, Vienna, Warsaw, Paris & Berlin.

Siemens supplies TVZ with the standard-gauge bogies that are required for the European railway network, as well as major parts of the carbody and components for the interior furnishings. TVZ handles the manufacturing of the bogies for service on the Russian broad gauge and will build the bodyshells for series operation.

Recall in May 2006 RZD and Siemens signed a contract to supply eight trains for €276 million, while in December 2011 another agreement on the supply of eight more trains worth €297 million, was also signed.
