Cities trends to go wifi-free
Update: 13:26, Tuesday, Sep 25,2012 (GMT+7)
Currently, Hoi An and Halong Bay are the two tourist destinations in Vietnam offering free Wi-Fi for visitors, following by Hue and Danang.

The Wi-Fi system in Hoi An, worth US$1,194,817 was developed by the Quang Nam Department of Information and Telecommunications in coordination with VDC Company that started offering internet services last March. At present, there are 350 Wi-Fi stations covering key areas in Hoi An, allowing free internet access at a speed of 256 kb per second.

Ha Long is the second city offering free Wi-Fi service to visitors after Hoi An town. Tourists visiting northern Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay are now able to enjoy free Wi-Fi service from 44 locations starting from April 23.

Following the examples of world heritage site Hoi An and Halong Bay, two major cities in central coastal region of Vietnam - Danang and Hue will provide free internet access for residents and tourists.

Thua Thien-Hue Provincial People’s Committee has planned to build a free wireless internet network in Hue City for tourists until the end of 2012. The plan aims to upgrade the tourism infrastructure in the former imperial capital as well as promote Hue’s images and tourist service quality to local and foreign visitors. At present, relevant bodies are moving to provide free internet access at 181 locations in districts in Hue City and Phuoc Tich village of Phong Dien District at a cost from the provincial budget and from some local businesses that enjoy benefits from the project.

Meanwhile, under a US$1 million project, Danang will install 150 Wi-Fi stations across the city to help citizens and tourists have free high-speed internet access by June 2013. Danang City will cooperate with private enterprises to offer services via the system through advertising, data services, television and traffic supervision to off-set the cost. The city’s free Wi-Fi access is part of an information technology development project funded by the World Bank.

By 2015 Quang Ninh province home to the famous World Heritage Halong bay will also provide free Wi-Fi service at economic and tourist hub cities such as Uong Bi, Cam Pha, Van Don and Mong Cai.
