A Taliban spokesman claimed credit for shooting down the helicopter in Kandahar province on Thursday morning, but NATO says that it is still investigating the cause of the crash.
NATO spokesman Jamie Graybeal said that four Afghan civilians and three Afghan soldiers were among the dead. He offered no details about the helicopter's mission.
In August last year, insurgents shot down a Chinook helicopter, killing
30 American troops, mostly elite Navy SEALs, in Afghanistan's central
Wardak province.
At least 221 American service members have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.
